Crime as Jihad: :: Developments in the Crime-Terror Nexus in Europe / Recurso electrónico [PDF] .-- : CTCSentinel , Oct. 2017 .-- Recurso online, 6 p.

Throughout Europe, criminal and extremist milieus are
merging, with many jihadis and ‘foreign fighters’ having
criminal pasts. An individual’s criminality can afect
his process of radicalization and how he operates once
radicalized. The Islamic State’s recent propaganda suggests
that the group is aware of this reality. It has positively
framed the crime-terror nexus by encouraging
crime ‘as a form of worship,’ and has been lauding those
from criminal backgrounds. This has been reflected on
the streets of Europe, where perpetrators have used
their criminal ‘skills’ to make them more effective terrorists.
While understanding of the crime-terror nexus
has developed, there are many knowledge gaps that
have practical implications for countering terrorism.
